English
The English Department helps students develop the communication and thinking skills required to participate effectively, confidently, and thoughtfully in the modern world. Courses at all levels are also designed to give students a sense of accomplishment by helping them become familiar with important ideas and works of literature from within the Western Christian tradition. Courses include works that give students a greater appreciation of their own culture through comparisons of outside connections as well. The curriculum emphasizes the works of both male and female writers of diverse backgrounds, and is compatible with the overall goals and standards of the program to encourage students to strive for excellence and recognition. Fine Arts
The Fine Arts Department instills in students an appreciation of arts with meaningful participation in a variety of creative projects. Through an understanding of the difficulties, inner conflicts, and rewards of artistic expression, Seton students come to the threshold of revealing their own voices in writing, in song, and in artistic media. Social Studies
The World History Department gives students the opportunity to examine civilizations from the dawn of human history to modern times. Students utilize a variety of perspectives to analyze general trends in history as well as investigate how both geography and philosophy have shaped cultures. The first semester focuses on the ancient Middle East, Rome, Medieval Europe, the Renaissance, and in the second semester students study World Wars I and II, and the rise and fall of the super-powers. Students are evaluated by class projects, oral presentations, written work, quizzes and exams. Special attention is given to the mastery of geographic areas. Applied Sciences
Mathematics
Mathematics is the foundation for critical and analytical thought. The Mathematics Department is committed to helping students develop their mathematical skills by emphasizing the teamwork and discipline necessary to master mathematical concepts. The curriculum is geared to provide the support necessary to enable students through small-groups in a problem solving format, to view mathematics as a positive opportunity for growth and the key for developing higher-order thinking skills. Science
The Science Department is committed to a belief that the goal of science education is the cultivation of scientific knowledge. The science curriculum is founded on the scientific method of solving problems, asking questions, and translating ideas into writing. The Science Department places special emphasis on obstacles and opportunities faced by young people in the sciences and encourages students to enroll and succeed in upper-level science courses. Physical Education & Health
The Physical Education curriculum provides an opportunity for students to increase their skills and self-confidence in physical activities and relate it to lifelong physical and emotional health. Emphasis is placed on topics having special relevance for young people including stress reduction and the role of cooperation and competition in sports. These subjects are explored to provide support for productive life choices. Worldwide Communications
Religion
The Religion Department instills the Christian values of faith, hope, and love throughout the Seton community to be integrated into everyone's lives. The curriculum includes Catholic teaching, scripture, morality, world religion, and social justice. Christian lifestyles, prayer life, a sense of Christian spirituality, self-esteem, and service to the community are essential components for the curriculum. Each student is required to provide eighty hours of service to the Seton community or other approved programs prior to graduation. Students may begin service during their freshmen year. World Languages
The World Languages Department is committed to the belief that the seeds of world peace lie in the study of world languages and the understanding of other cultures. The World Language curriculum focuses on the acquisition and use of French and Spanish in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Computer Instruction & Technology The Technology Department enables students to gain confidence in their ability to use computers as tools to solve a wide variety of problems. Once learned, these computers skills can be further developed throughout the course of study at Seton. Seton provides every student with a laptop computer that is supported and maintained by the Technology Resource Center. Several interactive textbooks rather than printed textbooks are installed in addition to Windows XP, Office 2003 Professional, and Vitalsource are among the software programs. Students are able to view books electronically, take class notes, and research projects on the Internet through our wireless network. Seton Academy is a Certified IBM Repair Program and the students are able to complete the technology program to reach the level of a masters level technician. |
